Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the season last?
Both the intramural and travel seasons will run from November to the
middle of March. Generally, we like to start when the football and
soccer seasons end and we like to finish our season a little before
the baseball, softball and lacrosse seasons begin.
When are practices?
There will be at least one practice during the week for the intramural
teams and we try to have two practices during the week for the travel
teams. All practices will be at Garnet Valley school gyms. This
is all subject to the availability of the school gyms and the location
of the practices may vary.
When are games?
The intramural leagues play games on Friday nights, Saturday or
Sunday mornings and afternoons. The travel teams generally play
games on Saturdays or Sundays.
Where are the games
played?
All intramural games are played at Garnet Valley school gyms. The
travel teams play their games at various gyms supplied by the Malvern
league. In past years, they have played their games at Tri-State,
Stetson School on Rt. 202 and various gyms in Chester County.
Do boys and girls play
together?
No, there are separate leagues for boys and girls.
Are children placed
based on their grade in school or
their age?
Players For the intramural league, players are placed on teams based
on their grade in school. For the travel teams, players are placed
on teams based on their birth date so they are eligible for the
end of year tournaments.
What is travel basketball?
Travel basketball is for the more competitive player. These
teams compete against teams from other basketball clubs in Delaware
and Chester Counties. Both the boy’s and girl’s travel
teams compete in the Malvern basketball league and then in the end
of year tournaments at various sports clubs throughout the Delaware
county.
Is the travel season longer?
Travel season typically begins in early November with practices
and the games usually start in early December. The regular season
should end in mid-February when the tournaments start and the season
should conclude in late March when the tournament play ends.
How much does it cost?
For the 2006 - 2007 season, the base registration fee is $65 for grades K
through 12 and $45 for the beginner group. If you make a travel team there
is an additional fee, which will be determined by the organizers of the Malvern league.
What equipment does
my child need to play basketball?
The only required equipment for basketball is a good pair of sneakers
with good ankle support. A jersey will be provided by BYC for all
intramural players and the Malvern league will supply a jersey for
the travel team. There may be an additional cost for a tournament
jersey if your child should be selected to the travel team.
One very important note: PLEASE, DO NOT BRING ANY BASKETBALLS TO
THE PRACTICES OR THE GAMES. THE COACHES WILL HAVE AN ADEQUATE NUMBER
OF BASKETBALLS TO RUN A PRACTICE AS WELL AS A GAME BALL. ANY OUTSIDE
BASKETBALLS OR ANY OTHER PLAYING BALLS WILL BE CONFISCATED AND RETURNED
AT THE END OF THE PRACTICE OR GAME.
What are the eligible
ages?
All children in grade K through 12 are eligible to play basketball this season.
Team eligibility for the intramural league will be determined by the child’s
current grade level and for the travel team eligibility is determined by the
player's age as of September 1, 2005.
What if my child has
never played before?
We would love to change that! We encourage first timers and most
kids are fairly adaptable and catch on quickly.
What if I change my
mind?
We will refund your registration fee.
How do I sign up to
coach?
